چکیده

Manipulation, bribery, and control are well-studied ways of changing the outcome of an election. Many voting systems are in the general case computationally resistant to some of these manipulative actions. However when restricted to single-peaked electorates, these problems suddenly become easy to solve. Recently, Faliszewski, Hemaspaandra, and Hemaspaandra [FHH11] studied the complexity of dishonest behavior in nearly single-peaked electorates. These are electorates that are not single-peaked but close to it according to some distance measure. In this paper we introduce several new distance measures regarding single-peakedness. We prove that determining whether a given profile is nearly single-peaked is in many cases NPcomplete. Furthermore, we explore the relations between several notions of nearly singlepeakedness.

Computational Aspects of Nearly Single-Peaked Electorates

Manipulation, bribery, and control are well-studied ways of changing the outcome of an election. Many voting systems are, in the general case, computationally resistant to some of these manipulative actions. However when restricted to single-peaked electorates, these systems suddenly become easy to manipulate. Recently, Faliszewski, Hemaspaandra, and Hemaspaandra (2011b) studied the complexity ...

Reinstating Combinatorial Protections for Manipulation and Bribery in Single-Peaked and Nearly Single-Peaked Electorates

Understanding when and how computational complexity can be used to protect elections against different manipulative actions has been a highly active research area over the past two decades. A recent body of work, however, has shown that many of the NP-hardness shields, previously obtained, vanish when the electorate has single-peaked or nearly single-peaked preferences. In light of these result...

The Complexity of Manipulative Attacks in Nearly Single-Peaked Electorates (Extended Abstract)

Many electoral control and manipulation problems—which we will refer to in general as “manipulative actions” problems—are NP-hard in the general case. Many of these problems fall into polynomial time if the electorate is singlepeaked, i.e., is polarized along some axis/issue. However, real-world electorates are not truly single-peaked—for example, there may be some maverick voters—and to take t...

Kemeny Elections with Bounded Single-Peaked or Single-Crossing Width

This paper is devoted to complexity results regarding specific measures of proximity to singlepeakedness and single-crossingness, called “singlepeaked width” [Cornaz et al., 2012] and “singlecrossing width”. Thanks to the use of the PQ-tree data structure [Booth and Lueker, 1976], we show that both problems are polynomial time solvable in the general case (while it was only known for single-pea...

On Detecting Nearly Structured Preference Profiles

Structured preference domains, such as, for example, the domains of single-peaked and single-crossing preferences, are known to admit efficient algorithms for many problems in computational social choice. Some of these algorithms extend to preferences that are close to having the respective structural property, i.e., can be made to enjoy this property by performing minor changes to voters’ pref...
